Hi, I'm Mei Adachi — residential advisor at Sorai Tokyo.

I grew up in Vietnam. When I first came to Japan and tried to find an apartment on my own, it was really hard. I didn't understand how rental contracts worked. I got turned away just for being a foreigner. The costs were vague and stressful. I still remember how lost I felt.

After that, I always wanted to do something for people in the same situation — foreigners trying to find a place in Japan, not knowing where to start. For a long time I couldn't find the right opportunity. Then I met the founder of Sorai Tokyo. I told him about it, he understood straight away, and we started this together.

When it comes to finding a home, the numbers don't tell the whole story. How well-lit is the walk from the station at night? What time does the nearest supermarket close? Which direction the bathroom faces makes a real difference in winter. These are the things I actually go and check — it's my favourite part of the job. On my days off I like making coffee from scratch, slowly. I'd love to help you find a place where coming home feels like that.

Street lighting, foot traffic at night, the safest path from the station — none of that shows up on a floor plan. I go and check in person. For anyone living alone, how safe that walk feels matters more than any feature on the listing. Ask me anything.

Layout and feel, not just square footage

The flow of the kitchen, storage depth, outlet placement, how the light moves through the day — these are the things that decide whether you feel at home or just housed. I talk through your daily routine and look for a place where mornings feel easy and evenings feel settled.

No pressure. Your pace, not mine.

I won't say "someone else might take it." Whether you're checking availability or working out move-in costs, take your time. Just send me a link over LINE and I'll look into it. As many times as you need.

I'm moving to Tokyo alone for the first time and I'm nervous about safety.

That's completely understandable. Beyond security features like auto-locks and video intercoms, I go and check the street lighting, foot traffic at night, and the overall feel of the neighbourhood myself. If there's a route you're worried about, I can walk it in advance and send you photos.

My move is still months away — is it too early to reach out?

Not at all. A lot of people message me when they're still just thinking about it. Whether you want to get a feel for prices or figure out which area suits you, feel free to ask. No rush.

Can I ask about a place I saw on SUUMO or HOME'S?
